Live Love Recycle

About

Live Love Recycle (LLR) is a Lebanon-based grassroots initiative that provides a free, on-demand recycling pick-up service through a mobile application. Born out of Lebanon’s 2015 garbage crisis, LLR addresses a critical gap in waste management by enabling household-level recycling while creating local job opportunities.

Users bag their sorted recyclables at home and request collection via the app; within about an hour, a driver on an electric bike, tuk-tuk, or truck arrives to transport the materials to recycling facilities. Early operations were supported by funding from the German development agency (BMZ) through the World Food Programme. Following a successful pilot, LLR expanded to municipalities beyond Beirut and developed a more robust app and logistics system.

To sustain operations beyond initial funding, LLR launched successful crowdfunding campaigns (raising around USD 70,000) and leveraged advertising and recyclable sales, keeping the service free for most users.

By 2020, the initiative had collected over 6,000 tons of recyclables from 25,000 households and engaged more than 400 collectors, primarily from vulnerable groups, including women and refugees. LLR also incorporates messaging on waste sorting and recycling, promoting awareness and behavioural change across communities.
