the North-East part of Lebanon, the North Lebanon Governorate Service Zone 2 is composed of two Districts (Cazas): Tripoli and Miniyeh.<\/p><p>Service Zone 2 has a single official disposal site, the Tripoli Sanitary Landfill, which operates with controlled measures to minimise environmental pollution. Waste from the Fayhaa Union is disposed of at the Tripoli Sanitary Landfill, whereas waste from the Miniyeh Union is directed to a mix of disposal pathways, either to local dumpsites or transported to Akkar \u2013 Srar dumpsite. Around 100% of the generated waste is collected, and about 67% is managed in controlled facilities.<\/p><p>Approximately 46% of the waste reaching Tripoli Sanitary Landfill is organic, based on the overall MSW composition estimated using the WaCT model. This high organic fraction results in significant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, particularly methane, which forms when organic waste decomposes in landfills, contributing to global warming and waste assessment together with <a href=\"https:\/\/unhabitat.org\/lebanon\">UN-Habitat Lebanon<\/a>. Before starting the fieldwork, the team met with local authorities and community stakeholders to explain the process, align expectations, and ensure smooth coordination. Local staff also received hands-on training to support the data collection.<\/p><p>This assessment used three internationally recognised tools that help cities understand how much waste they generate, how it is handled, and where problems\u2014such as plastic leakage\u2014may occur. It supports global Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11.6.1 and provides insights on food waste and resource recovery. Using WaCT, the team measured waste quantities, composition, and how waste moves through the system\u2014from households to final disposal or recycling.<\/p><p>A sample of 33 households was selected across three representative sampling zones within SZ2. It shows how waste flows through the system, where materials are recovered or reused, and where leakage into the environment occurs. Assumptions regarding treatment and disposal in different facilities suggest varying levels of waste diversion, recovery, and losses depending on the type of facility over different planning Horizons. These aspects will be addressed and refined in the Local Operational Master Plans to provide a more realistic assessment of waste diversion, treatment outcomes, and landfill requirements.<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-exclamation-circle\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">When applying the WaCT model, population data could not be separated by nationality. Lebanese citizens, displaced Syrians, and Palestinian refugees were grouped under one input category. Displaced groups were mostly placed in the low-income segment.  Population growth, waste generation, and waste composition differ between nationalities. This creates a key limitation of the WaCT model, as it cannot fully capture the diverse waste generation patterns in the Service Zone. This limitation will be addressed in the Local Operational Management
