Dr Nasser Yassin, and in the presence of the German Ambassador to Lebanon, H.E. Andreas Kindl, and the UN Deputy Special Coordinator, Imran Riza, UN-Habitat officially launched the <em data-start=\"374\" data-end=\"453\">Reducing Marine Litter in the Mediterranean through Waste Wise Cities Lebanon<\/em> (REMAL) project.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"474\" data-end=\"943\">Funded by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, and Nuclear Safety with a budget of over EUR 4.5 million, the REMAL project aims to reduce marine litter and improve municipal solid waste management along Lebanon\u2019s coast. Implemented in partnership with the Wuppertal Institute and Technische Universit\u00e4t Berlin, the project supports the Lebanese government in enforcing the national Integrated Solid Waste Management Law (Law 80\/2018).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"945\" data-end=\"1412\">During the launch event, H.E. Dr Yassin highlighted the importance of protecting Lebanon\u2019s environment and marine life, emphasising REMAL\u2019s contribution to cleaner coastal areas and healthier communities. Ambassador Kindl stressed the need for lasting commitment to transform good intentions into real, sustainable impact. Mr Riza underlined the project\u2019s role in safeguarding Lebanon\u2019s fragile natural ecosystem and advancing the country\u2019s sustainable development.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1414\" data-end=\"1526\">Over the next three years, REMAL will support 13 coastal Unions of Municipalities through several key actions:<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-170a1ba elementor-icon-list--layout-traditional elementor-list-item-link-full_width elementor-widget elementor-widget-icon-list\" data-id=\"170a1ba\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"icon-list.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<ul class=\"elementor-icon-list-items\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-dot-circle\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">Establishing a National Online Waste Observatory to monitor waste and inform policies<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-dot-circle\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">Developing Integrated Solid Waste Management Plans<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-dot-circle\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">Piloting innovative local waste management projects to prevent marine litter<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"elementor-icon-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-icon\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<i aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"fas fa-dot-circle\"><\/i>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-icon-list-text\">Launching a nationwide awareness campaign to promote sustainable waste practices<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c853ec0 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget-tablet__width-initial elementor-widget-mobile__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c853ec0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"95\" data-end=\"448\">The project also seeks to strengthen the capacities of national institutions and empower local communities to take ownership of waste solutions. As noted by Taina Christiansen, Head of UN-Habitat Lebanon, \u201cBy working together with authorities and communities, we can clean up our coastlines and promote a greener, more sustainable future for Lebanon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"450\" data-end=\"648\">Since 2006, UN-Habitat Lebanon has partnered with national and local actors to improve urban resilience and sustainability.
