REMAL Supports Street Cleanup Campaigns and Municipal Waste Services in El-Qaytaa

24 May 2025

As part of the Reducing Marine Litter in the Mediterranean through Waste Wise Cities Lebanon (REMAL) project, a series of environmental cleanup and municipal support activities were implemented in the Union of Municipalities of Ouasat oua Sahel El-Qaytaa during April and May 2025.

Following the identification of 11 open waste dumpsites across the Union’s 14 municipalities, REMAL supported a five-day cleanup campaign completed on 17 May 2025. The initiative focused on removing accumulated waste from unmanaged dumpsites as well as cleaning streets, valleys, sidewalks, neighbourhood areas, and other public spaces. These efforts helped improve local environmental conditions, reduce visible pollution, and minimize the risk of waste leakage into surrounding ecosystems.

In addition to the cleanup campaign, the project also supported the procurement of a municipal waste collection truck. The new vehicle is intended to strengthen waste collection and transport services across the municipalities of the Union, improving operational capacity and supporting more efficient solid waste management delivery.

Through a combination of immediate environmental action and practical municipal support, these activities reflect REMAL’s integrated approach to reducing marine litter and strengthening local waste management systems in Lebanon’s coastal regions. By working closely with municipalities and communities, the project continues to promote cleaner public spaces, stronger local services, and more sustainable waste management practices.
